Lot Essay

Mulatto was a bay colt foaled in 1823 by Catton out of Desdemona by Orville. Owned by Charles, 5th Earl Fitzwilliam, he was a high class horse between 1826 and 1829. His best race was the 1827 Fitzwilliam Cup at Doncaster in which he beat an exceptionally strong field of nine including Fleur-de-Lis and Memnon. He retired to his owner's stud at Milton near Peterborough, and died at the age of 24 in October 1847.
