Lot Essay

The sitter, twice married, sold Dorfold Hall in 1754 to James Tomkinson, his lawyer. His wives were Esther, who died at Dorfold Hall in 1740, the daughter of Thomas Cowper of Chester, and Catherine, daughter of Roger Comberbach of Chester. The sitter was a nephew of Roger Wilbraham (see lot 55).
