Lot Essay

'Pots and Pans to Mend' is from Wheatley's popular series of pictures of The Cries of London, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy 1792-95. 'Do you want any Matches?' and 'Strawberrys, Scarlet Strawberrys!' were sold in these Rooms, 12 July 1990, lots 74 and 75 (£6,000 and £7,000 respectively). The original inspiration for Wheatley's series derives from a French tradition depicting merchants carrying their wares with captions of their cries beneath. Engravings of the series were published by Colnaghi & Co. in pairs from 1793, although the present picture was not engraved until 1927.
