Moore, a drawing master and painter of topographical views, was an interesting Derbyshire figure credited with inventing the art of etching on marble. In 1818 he published Picturesque Excursions from Derby to Matlock Bath and its Vicinity, containing 12 small etchings of views although none of these appear to relate to the present picture. Following this, he produced a series of local illustrated guide books of the area between 1819 to 1833.
Three watercolours by Moore (one in the Derby Museum and two in the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery) show very similar handling, especially in the trees, to that in the present work.
