An old insription on the backing paper reads 'Le duc de Chablais, frère de Victor-amédée [.] [r]oi de Sardaigne. peint par Trossarelli. [.] porte L'ordre de L'annonc[.].'
Benedetto Maria Maurizio of Savoy, Duke of Chablais (1741-1808), was the half-brother of King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia. In 1775, Benedetto married his half-niece, the King's third daughter Princess Maria Anna of Savoy.
Another portrait of the Duke was illustrated on the front cover page of the sale of the Portrait Miniatures from the Estate of King Umberto II of Italy, Sotheby's, Geneva, 12 November 1984, lot 27. Another miniature, featuring the Duke with his wife, is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Miniature Sabaude, Turin, 1996, p. 22-23, no. 2.
