Louis (1729-1765), the only surviving legitimate son of King Louis XV of France and his wife Maria Leszczynska, married his first cousin the Infanta Maria Teresa, second daughter of King Philip V of Spain, in 1745. After the death of his wife, he remarried Maria Josepha of Saxony (1731-1767), daughter of King Augustus II of Poland (see lot 46), in 1747. Among the numerous children from this marriage were the Duke of Burgundy who died at the age of 10, Louis-Auguste Duke of Berry at birth and later King Louis XVI (1755-1793), depicted on the third miniature in the present lot, the future Kings Louis XVIII and Charles X of France, Clotilde Queen of Sardinia and the ill-fated Madame Elisabeth.
