Lot Essay

Hercules III Reginald of Este, Duke of Modena, married Princess Maria-Teresa of Cybo-Malaspina, the heiress of Massa and Carrara and was the grandfather of Maria-Ludovica, future Empress of Austria (see lot 64). He participated in the war against Revolutionary France in 1793 and was deposed by Napoleon in 1796 and died in 1803.
