Lot Essay

William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire K.G. (1738-1811), son of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire (1720-1764) and Charlotte Elizabeth, Baroness Clifford (d. 1754), inherited the Barony of Clifford, of Lanesborough from his mother.He married Georgiana (d. 30 March 1806), daughter of 1st Earl Spencer and had issue with two daughters. He married secondly in 1809, Lady Elizabeth (d. 20 March 1824), widow of John Thomas Foster and daughter of 4th Earl of Bristol. He was succeeed by his eldest son, William Spencer, 6th Duke of Devonshire.
