Jeanne-Françoise-Juliette-Adélaïde Bernard (1779-1849) was a celebrated beauty who married the successful banker Récamier. Chateaubriand, Benjamin Constant and Prince August of Prussia were amongst her many admirers. The present miniature is inspired by Gérard's full-length oil portrait in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris.
