Provenance
Anon. Sale Sotheby's, London 1981, lot 81, as 'Verelst'.
A contemporary version of the work by Ruysch, datable to circa 1683-5, is in the Baroda Picture Gallery, India. The Baroda picture, reattributed to Ruysch by Dr. Marianne Berardi, bears a false van Aelst signature and date 1659; the present composition differs in the absence of the large tulip in the Baroda picture, and the addition of a cloth draping the table. We are grateful to Dr. Marianne Berardi and Mr. Fred Meijer for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.
