Arietta Red Wine is a Napa Valley wine produced by winemaker John Kongsgaard in partnership with Christie's wine consultant and auctioneer Fritz Hatton, debuted in the Fall of 1998 with the release of the 1996 vintage. The wine is made from grapes sourced from Lee Hudson's vineyard in Carneros, and is founded upon a tiny 2.2 acre block of Cabernet Franc at the highest point of the ranch. Slope, soil, exposure, temperature, and sun combine to make this microsite perfect for the Cabernet Franc. Arietta Red Wine is fleshed out with Merlot: 19 in the 1997 vintage, and 40 in 1998. The double magnum of 1997 offered below is one of ten produced, all reserved for charitable purposes. The 1998 is the first wine of this vintage to be offered, and one of twenty cases of magnums produced. Extraordinary efforts were undertaken to achieve perfectly ripe fruit in this cool and late vintage, including dropping one third of the fruit at the beginning of October. Grapes were harvested on October 24 at an ideal 24.6 brix; but production dropped from 700 to 500 cases. Also offered below for the first time ever is Arietta Merlot 1998, the debut vintage. The wine is 100 Merlot and grapes also come from the Hudson Vineyard in Carneros. Production was 400 cases, of which 20 cases were bottled in magnum.
