LIBRARY LOTS OF HISTORIC RIDGE
"Ridge began in 1959, when a trio of Stanford Research Institute engineers headed by Dave Bennion bought an abandoned winery and the Monte Bello vineyard, situated high atop the steep Santa Cruz Mountains, above Cupertino. Bennion and his colleagues began tending the vines on weekends, and started making small lots of wine from the Monte Bello vineyard, while also seeking out old Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and other Italian field blend varietals...Ridge developed its own style of big, ripe and often tannic wines which quickly won a devout following. By the mid-1960s, the winery was producing a Monte Bello Cabernet along with as many as six or seven other red wines, most of them Zinfandels. It soon became apparent that running a winery required more than weekend management, and in 1969, Ridge hired the talented Paul Draper as winemaker, putting him in charge of shaping the wine styles, which he has done admirably."
