Lot Essay

A study for the Battle of Senef painted in 1787-8 by Gagneraux for the decoration of the palace of the Grand Condé in Dijon. The picture is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon (Roma, Galleria Borghese, Bégnine Gagneraux, un pittore francese nella Roma di Pio VI, 1983, no. 37, illustrated). That picture was one for a commission of six, of which only two were executed.
