A Macao ivory chess set, late 19th century
Stained red and natural, the carved royals' and bishops' heads on baluster stems and carved circular bases, the knights as horses heads (one stained piece damaged), the rooks as turrets with flag finials -- king 3¾in. (9.5cm.) high, pawn 2¼in. (5.6cm.) high; contained within a folding black and gilt lacquered papier-mâché board, with a backgammon board to the interior -- 16½in. (42.2cm.) wide
