Of rectangular form, the cover with a central panel of three registers of quills, the canted edges with further conforming registers, the tapering openwork sides with further quills descending to the base, inset overall with ivory discs, the cover underside inset with an ivory elephant above a plaque inscribed MATARA -- 9¾in. (24.8cm.) wide, 73/8in. (18.2cm.) deep, 5in. (12.7cm.) high
