Lot Essay

The shape of this overmantel mirror with triple plate and arched centre, relates to a gadrooned verre églomisé overmantel mirror, sold anonymously in these Rooms, 7 April 1983, lot 29 and another, also with gadrooned giltwood cresting, sold by a lady of title, in these Rooms, 19 November 1981, lot 28. There is a similar verre églomisé mirror dated circa 1690, illustrated in Y. Hackenbroch, English Furniture With Some Furniture of Other Countries in the Irwin Untermyer Collection, London, 1958, pl. 133, fig. 162.

It also relates to an overmantel mirror of similar shape at Hampton Court Palace, dated c.1700, whose semi-circular cresting and top is contained within the carved oak moulding of the room. The moulding is not unlike that of the present lot (P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev.ed., vol. II, p.326, fig.41).
