The serpentine rectangular top above a fitted mahogany-lined drawer with a sliding green baize-lined brushing-surface, above three further serpentine-fronted long drawers, on splayed bracket feet, with two associated glass bottles, inscribed in chalk to the reverse '177' and with printed label inscribed 'T. Johnson & ... Ltd. B 34...8 BELFAST'

Lot Essay

This dressing-commode relates to a design dated 1787, and illustrated in A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 3rd ed., London, 1794, pl. 76. Entitled 'Dressing Drawers', the description states: 'The top drawer in which contains the necessary dressing equipage; the others are applicable to common use'.
