The gun, game bag and two birds to the right of the picture derive from a painting by Melchior d'Hondecoeter, formerly with D. Katz, Dieren, 1962.

The collection of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry, formed to a large extent by Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu (?1638-1709) and Anne, Countess of Buccleuch (1746-1812), is one of the most celebrated private collections in the United Kingdom. The collection is now divided between Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfriesshire, Boughton House, Northamptonshire and Bowhill, Selkirk.
