Lot Essay

This is very similar to the painting in Stuttgart, described as from the workshop of Jordaens, of which a smaller version (61 x 44.5cm.) is recorded in a private collection in Brussels (see N. de Poorter, in the catalogue of the exhibition, Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678), I, Antwerp, Koninkljk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, 1993, under no. A35). It is possible that Jordaens himself added some highlights at least to the angel.
