Lot Essay

Francesco di Giorgio was the outstanding Sienese artist of the late quattrocento, active not only as a painter but also as a sculptor and a military architect. In addition to religious commissions, he supplied a considerable number of secular works, notably cassoni. It has recently been suggested that many of the pictures traditionally asigned to Francesco were collaborative works, executed in part by studio assistants, including the so-called Fiduciario di Francesco.

We are grateful to Everett Fahy for confirming the attribution, having examined the picture in the original.
