Lot Essay

Sold with a certificate from Professor Ferdinando Arisi, dated 14 February 1976, in which he attributes the picture to Panini, considering it substantially by his hand, referring to the figures and the Colosseum. Arisi (1984) mentions a number of versions and copies, including one larger, initialled canvas of rather wider format which may well, if it is the example illustrated by him, be autograph.
