Lot Essay

This is a bozzetto for one of a series of three frescoes in the portego of the Palazzo Boldù, Venice; the other two depict The Judgement of Paris and The Liberation of Andromeda (M. Magrini, loc. cit.). Another bozzetto for the same fresco is recorded by Marina Magrini as in a private collection (ibid., no. 116).

The Palazzo Boldù, which had been build for the Ghisi in the seventeenth century passed into the hands of the Boldù family by the marriage of Adriana Ghisi to Cristoforo Boldù in 1657. Marina Magrini suggests that Fontebasso probably painted the frescoes just after the restructuring of the interior to mark the wedding of Anzolo Boldù and Benizia Rubbi, 12 January 1745.
