Lot Essay

The richly fretted backs of these chairs, centred by a basket of fruit and surrounded by leafy arabesques, relate to the style popularised by Daniel Marot (d.1752) during the reign of Louis XIV. This pattern of chair frame corresponds to that of a chair acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum (H. Cescinsky, English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century, London, Vol. I., p. 53, fig. 59). An almost identical set of William and Mary walnut side chairs was sold by Order of the Personal Representatives of the late G.A.V. Duckworth, Esq., Orchardleigh Park, Frome, Somerset, Christie's house sale, 21 September 1987, lot 44.
