Lot Essay

A walnut writing-chair with closely-related cartouche-shaped back, from Boyton House, Wiltshire, is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, p. 272, fig. 142. Another writing chair, again with similar back and arms, and probably supplied to Sir Robert Walpole (d.1745) for Houghton Hall, Norfolk and in the collection of the Marquess of Cholmondeley, is illustrated in P. Macquoid, A History of English Furniture, The Age of Walnut, London, 1908, fig. 184 (a).
