Lot Essay

The naval commander, Sir William Sidney Smith, was born in Westminster on 21st July 1764. He entered the navy and in 1780 was promoted to lieutenant for his bravery at Cape St. Vincent. He became admiral in 1821. He died on 26th May 1840 in Paris.
