A GEORGE II LABURNUM, ROSEWOOD, WALNUT AND PARQUETRY CENTRE TABLE
Reconstructed in the 19th Century from a George II side table and late 17th Century parquetry veneer
Inlaid overall with boxwood and ebony chequer-banding, the rectangular top with a central oval medallion inlaid with an eight-pointed star, in a rectangular panel surrounded by further panels, above a conformingly-panelled frieze with a six-pointed star at each end flanking a long drawer, on cabriole legs headed by acanthus and patera angles, on hairy paw feet, the parquetry veneer originally a door from a cabinet, the top with restored shrinkage splits and previously re-supported, restorations

Lot Essay

The antiquarian table's ebony-enriched top with its chequered-ribbon medallion enclosing a chequered sunburst together with elements of the frame, are likely to have been adapted from a late 17th Century cabinet-on-stand such as that sold anonymously in these Rooms, 14 December 1978, lot 87.
