A set of scarlet japanned seat-furniture (six side chairs and a daybed) of almost identical design and decoration to the present lot was sold from the collection of the late Archbold van Beuren, Gray Craig, Newport, Rhode Island, U.S.A., Christie's New York, house sale, 23-24 July 1985, lot 180 and frontispiece illustration (the daybed now at Leeds City Galleries, Temple Newsam House, no. 15/1989). A set of four side chairs with almost identical backs but different legs and stretchers was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 16 July 1982, lot 69.
