By early 1938, Allard was beginning to think about going into serious production. Still firmly Ford based, a range of modern-looking open sports models and tourers was announced, all powered by Ford V8 or Lincoln V12 motors. Bodies were built using coachbuilder'’s traditional ash-framed methods. They were well finished and equipped, with refinements such as Telecontrol adjustable shock absorbers and a two-speed rear axle amongst the options. There were well-stocked instrument panels and the excellent Marles steering. Altogether, the accelerative Allard was a very appealing proposition.
The history of this particular Allard Special is unusually fully documented. Its first owner was Arthur Allard, Sydney'’s father, always supportive, who ordered a Coachcraft four-seater sports tourer for which he can have had little need and was legendarily driven about in it by a chauffeur. 1n 1945 it was owned and used in competitions by J.H. Appleton, one of Sydney'’s circle of enthusiasts. It crossed the Atlantic in the late 1970’s to be raced in VSCCA East Coast events. In 1990 it competed in the Historic races at Monterey and was invited to the 1990 Pebble Beach Concours, where it was exhibited in the 1936/9 Sports and Racing Class.
The present owner brought it back to England in 1991 and carried out a sympathetic restoration. As presented, it now sports some most suitable modifications, including a Mercury V8 engine with Edelbrock heads and twin carburettors on an Allard manifold. Centre-lock wire wheels of correct diameter set off the deeply finned cast iron brake drums. It is understood that since it was restored the car has been used regularly by the vendor and his family on suitable occasions and will be offered with a current MOT certificate.
