Lot Essay

Dr J P C Kent suggests that this coin is an official Byzantine issue of an uncertain western mint and that the following coin is a Lombardic imitation. The cross on the front of the diadem is a feature of the coinage of Ravenna at this time. Sotheby's (presumably working from the catalogue illustration only) considered that this coin was struck from the same obverse die as the next coin. We are able to compare the coins themselves and we find that this is not the case.
