AN HISTORIC CANE BELONGING TO COL. JOSEPH R. COCKERILL, COMMANDER OF THE 70TH OHIO
The heavy wood cane, set with a silver plaque inscribed Shiloh/Line of Battle/70th O.V.I./April 6.62.94, and mounted with a decorated brass head.

Lacks base ferrule.
The battle of Shiloh fought April 6-7, 1862. Created a National Monument on the 22nd Anniversary April 6, 1894. According to family tradition this cane was made from a branch taken from the battle field by Col. Cockerill on that date and so mounted with the engraved silver plaque.
Col. Joseph R. Cockerill in his report to Col. Buckland regarding the battle of Shiloh writes:
"Sir: On Sunday morning, April 6, 1862, an alarm was made in the front of this brigade, and I called my regiment from breakfast and formed it in a line of battle on the color line. I then heard heavy firing on the left and in front of our line, and advanced my regiment about 200 paces in the woods, and formed line of battle, pursuance of your order."
