Presented to Lieut. H.A. Johnson By The Members of Co.B 3d Regt. Me. Vol. with twenty-one battles listed, and bearing a second inscription Captured at Battle of the Wilderness May 5th 1864. Returned by Capt. J.C.B. Smith 12th South Carolina Regt. June 4th 1875.
The curved double fullered blade with extensive etched panels on each side, etched IRON PROOF on back, and bearing the sunken brass disk PROOF at ricasso, gilt brass hilt, shagreen wrapped grip bound by twisted brass wire, nickel plated sheath bearing three mounts, the top-most inscibed Presented to/Lieut. H.A. Johnson/By the Members of/Co.B/3d. Regt. Me. Vol. within a shield shaped panel, on the reverse are engraved twenty-one battles 1st. Bull Run - Monocacy/Yorktown - Fredricksburg/Williamsburg - Chancelorville/Fair oaks - Gettysburg/Glendale - Kelly's Ford/Malvernhill - Brandy Sta./2d. Bull Run - Orange Grove/Chantilly - White Oak Swamp/Seven Pines - Peach Orchard/Savage Station - Mine Run/Wilderness and below the inscription Captured at/Battle of the Wilderness/May 5th 1864./Returned by/Capt. J.C.B. Smith/12th South Carolina Regt./June 4th 1875.
