Lot Essay

Chief Carpenter's Mate W. Beard was born in Stoke Damerel, Stockport in 1817 and entered the Royal Navy as Carpenter's Crew aboard H.M.S. Medea in 1840. In her he participated in the Syria operations of the latter year, further active service being encountered in the Calliope and in the Amethyst off China between 1856-60. Beard was finally discharged as a Chief Carpenter's Mate in 1863.
