Lance-Corporal James Roy was born near Elgin in 1852 and enlisted in the 42nd Highlanders in 1870 direct from the Inverness Highland Light Infantry Militia. Advanced to Lance-Corporal shortly after participating in the Ashantee and Coomassie operations of 1873-74, Roy was dicharged in 1876 due to chronic Bright's Disease.
