Private Charles Henry Sherwood was born in Folkestone, Kent in 1869 and enlisted in the East Kent Regiment in 1888. Transferred to the Army Reserve, after service in India and back home, he was recalled to the Colours in late 1899, following the outbreak of hostilities in South Africa.
