Lot Essay

H.M.S. Argonaut, a Leander Class Frigate, was commanded by Captain C.H. Layman, D.S.O., M.V.O. During the 'massive air attacks' of May 1982, in the early stages of the landings in San Carlos, the Argonaut was seriously damaged and forced to anchor - two unexploded bombs having lodged in her, one of them in the Forward Magazine. For his great courage in subsequent Bomb Disposal operations, Staff Sergeant J. Prescott, R.E. was awarded a posthumous C.G.M., and the Argonaut, after nine days stranded at anchor while the battle raged around her, finally made off under her own steam.
