Colour-Sergeant Jacob Carter was born in the Parish of Plympton, Devon, in 1813 and enlisted in the Plymouth Division of the Royal Marines in 1831. Advanced to Sergeant on the eve of the First China War, in which he served at numerous actions between January and October 1841, Carter gained further advancement to Colour-Sergeant in the following year. In September 1848, however, following a stint in hospital in Monte Video, he was discharged suffering with Phthisis.
