Lot Essay

Private Horatio William Burden was born at Hungerford, Berkshire in 1853 and enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1871. Posted to the Chatham Division, he went on to serve in the Royal Marine Battalion in Egypt and the Sudan, and was wounded in action at Yeneba near Tamaai on 22.3.1885. Awarded the L.S. and G.C. Medal in the following year, Burden was finally discharged in 1890.
