Lot Essay

Private Thomas Wells Armitage was born in Pembroke in 1881 and enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1896. Posted to the Portsmouth Division, he went on to see active service in H.M.S. Terrible during the Boxer Rebellion and the Boer War, and was enrolled in the Royal Royal Fleet Reserve in 1909. Recalled on the outbreak of hostilities, Armitage served in the Leviathan on the North American and West Indies Stations and was finally demobilised in 1919.
