Lot Essay

Band Master 1st Class Henry Richard Eaves was born in London in 1874 and joined the Royal Navy as a Band Boy in 1890. Six years later, while serving aboard the Battleship H.M.S. Resolution, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Testimonial. Eaves transferred to the Royal Marine Band in 1904 and was advanced to Band Master 1st Class in 1909, his discharge in 1913 being short-lived as a result of the outbreak of hostilities. He was finally demobilised in 1919.
