Captain Norman Berwick Fuller, [M.B.E.], was born in November 1898 and had just completed his Law Degree at Oxford University at the outbreak of hostilities. Originally commissioned into the 7th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps, with whom he served in France in 1915, including the Hooge operations, Fuller transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in December of the same year. Qualifying for his Aviator's Certificate in April 1916, he joined No. 34 Squadron and was posted to France that July. Subsequently hospitalized for reasons unknown, he did not rejoin his unit until the following November, but thereafter, over the next couple of months, flew a number of sorties over the Western Front, often in an Artillery-spotter role, outings which were not always without incident, such as that of 26.12.1916 ('Driven down by hostile aircraft ...').
Returning to the U.K. in the New Year, Fuller was posted to No. 72 Squadron in the Middle East, taking up the post of 'B' Flight Commander. These latter services resulted in the award of an M.B.E. (London Gazette 3.6.1919 refers), the Recommendation for which was submitted by the C.-in-C., Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force: 'For devotion to duty from June to October 1918. He carried out successfully the very difficult task of commanding the Royal Air Force Detachment in North West Persia, surmounting all obstacles by his hard work, tact and organisation'; sold with a copy portrait photograph from the archive of the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon.
