Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Capel Sandys was born in Dublin in 1790 and entered the Honourable East India Company's Service in 1805 as a Cadet. Arriving in India in 1807, he was appointed an Ensign in the 14th Native Infantry, advanced to Lieutenant in 1812 and served in the Nepal War of 1815. During the Third Maharatta War of 1817-18 he led a storming party at the capture of Chanda. Advanced to Captain in 1824 and to Major in 1830, Sandys retired two years later with the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
