M.C. London Gazette 9.1.1918 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his Platoon in a counter attack with great gallantry, fearlessly moving about under heavy fire and showing no
regard for his personal safety. By his energy he was the means of taking several of the enemy prisoners, and assisted very materially in the success of the counter attack'.

Captain Richard Balfour Purdon, M.C., originally enlisted as a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Commissioned 2nd
Lieutenant in 1915, he was posted to the 7th Battalion, Cameron
Highlanders in June 1916 and was wounded on 8.8.1916 at the Battle of the Somme. Rejoining his unit in May 1917, he was awarded the M.C. for his gallant actions on 18.7.1917 at the Battle of Ypres. Promoted Captain in 1917, he was wounded a second time on 1.6.1918.
