Lieutenant in 1915, he was posted to the 7th Battalion, Cameron
Highlanders in June 1916 and was wounded on 8.8.1916 at the Battle of the Somme. Rejoining his unit in May 1917, he was awarded the M.C. for his gallant actions on 18.7.1917 at the Battle of Ypres. Promoted Captain in 1917, he was wounded a second time on 1.6.1918.
