Private J. Pocock was taken P.O.W. at Oceana Mine, near Vlakfontein on 26.12.1900, following a gallant stand made by Captain C. Radcliffe and six Companies of the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Outnumbered by a Boer force of some 450 men, the Riflemen sustained around 60 casualties. Sadly, having survived the action, and been released, Pocock died of disease in January 1902.
