Lot Essay

Private Edward Marratt was born near Oxford and enlisted in the 60th Rifles in August 1840. Posted to the 1st Battalion, with whom he remained until being discharged in July 1853, he went on to see active service in the Punjab Campaign 1848-49. Marratt re-enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade in September 1853 and embarked for the Crimea in July 1854. Subsequently serving with distinction at the Battles of the Alma and Inkermann (two head wounds), in addition to the operations before Sebastopol (arm wound), he was awarded the D.C.M. (Recommendation dated 19.2.1855). Released from hospital in March 1856, he returned home for a brief period prior to embarking for India, where he participated in the Lucknow operations. Marratt was finally discharged after 21 years with Colours in October 1861 and was a recipient of the L.S. and G.C. Medal.
