Lot Essay

Private Alfred Oliver was born in London and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in May 1894, aged 18 years. Initially posted to the 2nd Battalion, he variously served in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malta, prior to participating in operations in the re-conquest of the Sudan and afterwards in the occupation of Crete. Oliver was also a veteran of the Boer War, having participated in the Defence of Ladysmith and Belfast operations. He was discharged in May 1906.
