Lot Essay

Private James Perry was born in Bermondsey and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade at Winchester in August 1891, aged 18 years. Clearly regretting his choice of career, he deserted in early October, his subsequent capture resulting in confinement until the New Year. Back on the straight and narrow, he served in India, Hong Kong and Singapore, latterly as a Bandsman, prior to seeing active service in South Africa between October 1899 and April 1901. Perry was discharged to the Army Reserve in December 1903.
