Rifleman Thomas Mansfield Smith originally enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment in December 1935, but transferred to the Rifle Brigade in March 1936. Subsequently employed in the Palestine troubles between June 1939 and January 1940, he went on to serve in more regular operations in Egypt, North Africa and Italy between the latter period and January 1944. Smith was discharged in early 1946.
