D.C.M. London Gazette 6.2.1918 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He was always in front of the Company leading the men on and inspiring them with confidence. When the position had been captured he went out with two men to where about 40 of the enemy were holding up the advance of part of another unit. He succeeded in killing or capturing the whole party, taking two Officers and 20 Other Ranks prisoners. His prompt and courageous act was of the greatest assistance to the advance'.

Warrant Officer Class 2 Frederick W.Bean, D.C.M., was decorated for his bravery in an action fought south-east of Ypres on 20.9.1917, when the 16th Battalion, Rifle Brigade encountered serious opposition. On that day, Sergeant William Burman of the same unit won a V.C., the latter part of his citation including indirect mention of Bean, whom he followed with one other man in the episode that led to the capture of two enemy Officers and 20 Other Ranks. Burman had already stormed a machine-gun post single-handed.
