Major-General Alfred Wintle was born in 1822 and attended Rugby School during the Headmastership of Dr. Arnold. Entering the Honourable East India Company's Forces as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery in 1843, he was present at the Battle of Maharajpoor in December of the same year. Once more in action at Sobraon in the First Sikh War, Wintle was advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1861 and appointed a Staff Officer in the Royal Horse Artillery on the amalgamation of the H.E.I.C's Forces in 1862. He was given the honorary rank of Major-General on his retirement in 1872.
