Lieutenant-Colonel George Frederick Churchill was originally commissioned into the 106th Foot as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1864, and served in India with the Regiment as a Musketry Instructor until 1867. Transferring to the Bengal Staff Corps as a Lieutenant in the following year, he was posted as a Wing Officer to the lst Gurkha Regiment and appointed Adjutant in 1870. Subsequently engaged in the Perak operations of 1875-76, Churchill was advanced to Captain in the latter year and went on to serve with the Gurkhas in the southern regions of Afghanistan between 1878-80. Further advanced to Major in 1884 and appointed Second-in-Command of the 1/1st Gurkhas in 1886, Churchill retired as a half-Colonel in 1892.
